What is Mappillai Samba Rice?
Rice has a vast history in ancient food history and it is still dominating the Indian cuisine by its plenty of uses and benefits. Mappillai Samba Rice is a native variety of rice which is red in colour but sometimes it is also found grey in colour. It is predominantly grown and used in TamilNadu. But it initially originated in Thiruvannamalai, TamilNadu.
Cultivation process of Mappillai Samba Rice
This rice is best cultivated during the season of Samba which is between July to January and September to February. It can tolerate heavy flooding as well. Mappillai Rice turns out great if grown on clayey and sandy type of clay soil. Crop duration is mostly 160 days which is a moderate time period. It’s plant has a height of about 120cm.
One more good thing about this rice is that it requires the least amount of effort when it comes to its maintenance, as it requires no fertilizers or pesticides. Hence, it comes out best with organic farming as well.
